An Assembly Question as by MLA Robin Swan on behalf of Save The Mid shows that public hospitals are not being considered for extra beds, Health Trusts are favoring giving these extra beds to Private Hospitals.

Northern Health Trust Is The Only Trust in N Ire Not To Provide Deliveries In Mid Wife Led Maternity UnitsThe Northern Health & Social Care Trust is the largest residential Trust in Northern Ireland, yet according to an Assembly question Edwin Poots has confirmed that no mid wife led maternity services are available to mothers who reside in the Northern Trust.
In June 2011 Edwin Poots announced Transforming Your Care, TYC, the definitive health review for Northern Ireland, for 2 years the review team would engage with the public, Magherafelt Council did not respond to Transforming Your Care, they were the only Council in Northern Ireland not to respond on behalf of their residents. However In Nov 2011 Magherafelt Council agreed to turn Mid Ulster Hospital into a Health Center outside of the consultation process. When this letter was published in the Derry Post Magherafelt Council despite being asked could not think of a responeOn average 3 patients per opening day have been referred from Mid Ulster Minor Injury Unit as their treatment could not be carried out there. The poll also shows that 48% of family doctors think that patients now have to wait longer for a GP appointment, while four in five GPs are more likely to want to quit the profession than they were five years ago.
Above Average Attendance At Mid Ulster Minor Injury Unit despite NHSCT failure enhance services6/4/2013 "Despite the increased use of the Minor Injury Unit at Mid Ulster Hospital, its network hospital for serious acute illnesses is still facing problems" Save The Mid"The Mid Ulster Minor Injury Unit was the only emergency unit in the Northern Health & Social Care Trust to see an increase in patients from the previous year"In regards to the statutory residential homes, Edwin Poots was able to stop these closures as he was directly responsible for all service changes as per Transforming Your Care.
Save The Mid, amid the controversy of the bed capacity crisis at Antrim Area Hospital, Save The mid can reveal that the NHSCT did not consider using Trust owned facilities to provide intermediate health care beds to help and solve the problem.
The cumulative position of Mid Ulster minor injury unit is the only facility showing an increase in attendances of all the A&E units in the Trust, within this figure there is a high number of patients who are still having to be transferred to another Emergency Department.
Recently a grandmother who while baby sitting her grandchild, aged 4, had to attended the minor injury unit only to have to travel to Causeway as she was unaware of what was available in the unit. This caused a bit of distress for the grandmother. There is scope to further develop the minor injury unit to take chest x-rays and have them tele-monitored to free up the A&E in Antrim, for both this type of x-ray and longer opening hours. In my view the board have yet to act on fully informing the public on what is available at the minor injury unit, and I will resubmit within this question a request that every household in the NHSCT be posted a leaflet describing what is and is not available in the minor injury unit, this was first requested at the the board room meeting post the closure of the A&E. The above is part of what Save The Mid have lobbied for in order to create extra capacity at Antirm Area Hospital and also give a service to Mid Ulster residents, these were part of a larger response that was submitted for the Transforming Your Care Health review, the full report can be found here link
A like wise request was made after the Rutter & Hinds review in Jan 2012, the Health Committee contacted Save The Mid for recommendations the full document and response can be found here link The problems that Antrim Area Hospital has faced have been there before they shut acute services at Mid Ulster Hospital. When Belfast City hospital lost its A&E it was turned into a intermediate & chronic inpatient hospital, there is no reason why the same cannot be afforded to Mid Ulster. |
